Michael Toohey of Belief Corporation gives a personal account of managing depression.
I often wondered if I should be the person writing a piece on depression. After all, I am not a psychologist and certainly do not claim to be one. Then again, I am a white Anglo Saxon male who has had real experience with depression and my authority comes from my own real life. Mine and then some of my clients. I have glanced down the black hole on a number of occasions. When I have spoken with others and in particular men this is a an epidemic! Numerous men have shared that they have had desperate thoughts – for example “Is this all worth it!”
Depression and anxiety can begin with simple mood swings and small changes in behaviour, but eventually the effects can take complete hold of one’s mind and life. Day-to-day tasks become overwhelming, you may feel completely alone, and powerless. Frustration then helplessness sets in quickly. This is followed closely by shame! In actual fact it seems to me that shame is the actual killer? Many males keep closed down and struggle to share. Hence we see suicide statistics in Australia show male/female comparisons show that 75% are male! (date 2018)
We realise that it can often be challenging to ask for help, especially for males who are suffering. Pressure from the greater society reinforces unfair ideologies of masculinity, making men ashamed to discuss their emotions and preventing them from reaching out for help. Men or women must reach out for support. We highly recommend you obtain professional help as a priority.
Yes, there are chemical imbalances within our body that cause depression and affect anyone no matter their gender or age. Yes, I finally went to the doctor and was prescribed medication FAR TOO EASILY!
It is important to remember that you are not defined by your depression, nor does it need to define your life. I know this is a difficult concept if you are in the middle of it; however, you can rise above it. If you are a person who can rationalise your situation and are open to a conversation or has questions, then Belief Corporation may be able to assist.
At Belief Corporation we offer a program including a specialised support network and guidance to help those struggling with depression and anxiety. We want to help you realign your thoughts and your beliefs so that you can reclaim your happiness and start enjoying life again.
Disclaimer:
Belief Corporation will only work with those dealing with depression that they feel they can manage in-house. (Some clients may be referred on for specialist treatment from one of our resource partners).
